Why Dashboard Warning Lights Exist
Modern vehicles monitor dozens of systems simultaneously — from engine performance and transmission temperature to brake pressure and tire inflation. When something falls outside normal operating parameters, the vehicle's onboard diagnostic system triggers a warning light on your instrument cluster. The Lights You're Most Likely to See
Check Engine Light (CEL) — This amber light is one of the most misunderstood on any dashboard. It can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a misfiring engine. A steady light means the issue is present but not immediately catastrophic; a flashing CEL means the engine is misfiring and you should reduce speed and seek service promptly to avoid catalytic converter damage. Oil Pressure Warning — This red light (often shaped like an oil can) signals that oil pressure has dropped critically low. Pull over safely and shut off the engine immediately. Battery / Charging System — An illuminated battery symbol indicates the electrical charging system isn't functioning correctly. Common culprits include a failing alternator, a worn drive belt, or a weak battery. You may have limited driving time before the vehicle loses power. Minimize electrical loads and head to a service center promptly.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) — An amber light shaped like a cross-section of a tire with an exclamation point means one or more tires are significantly under- or over-inflated. Check all four tires (and the spare if monitored) with a gauge and inflate to the pressure listed on the driver's door jamb sticker — not the number on the tire sidewall. ABS

Alternator

Less Common but Important Lights
Temperature Warning — A red thermometer icon means your engine coolant is overheating. Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes before opening the hood.
