Use a Simple Sun-Tracking Test
Before finalizing your garden location, observe the spot on a clear day and mark the hours it receives unobstructed sun. Do this in mid-spring when tree foliage is beginning to fill in — shade patterns change significantly from bare-branch winter to leafy summer. Don't Skip the Hardening-Off Step
Transplanting seedlings directly from a warm indoor environment into the garden — even on a mild day — can cause transplant shock or irreversible sun scald. Seedlings need gradual exposure to wind, temperature swings, and direct sunlight over at least seven days. Rushing this step is one of the most common reasons first-year gardeners lose plants they worked weeks to grow.
Watering, Feeding, and Ongoing Care
Most vegetable gardens need about one inch of water per week. Water deeply and less frequently — this trains roots to grow downward rather than staying shallow and vulnerable.
